- Search the seller's phone number, email and name online, and run the photos through a reverse image search (Google Lens, TinEye). Copied or AI-made photos are a common sign of a scam.
- See the pet before you pay: visit in person, or ask for a live video call that shows the pet. If the seller always has a reason why not, walk away.
- Be wary of prices far below the market, pressure to decide fast, and requests for a deposit to “hold” the pet.
- Never pay a stranger by wire transfer, gift card, crypto or money-sending app (Western Union, MoneyGram, Zelle, Cash App and similar). These payments cannot be recovered or refunded. Pay when you collect the pet.
- Check any “shipper”, escrow or transport company yourself on its official website; fake delivery sites copy real ones. Be wary of new fees after you have paid.
- Never share verification codes (OTP), bank logins or ID documents with a seller.
